Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of West Bend Digital Timer, WhiteCustomer Review: Love it so much, I've bought 5! Summary: 5 Stars
Above anything else, my timer MUST have a keypad. I cannot abide devices that force you to hold down keys and scroll through numbers to reach the one(s) you want. So, in the limited selection of small timers meeting that criterion, this one has been, far and away, the best. I bought one to keep next to my laptop to remind me of upcoming conference calls when I work from home; then I purchased another to keep at work for the same reason; and the third one I acquired is used at home for a variety of purposes. I put it on a ribbon and wear it around my neck when I want to remind myself to take the laundry out of the dryer (no wrinkles!) or to turn off the water in the yard (conservation during California drought times) or not to dawdle in the bathroom when I'm getting ready to go out for the evening; and, of course, for the customary remninders when cooking. All three units have worked flawlessly for the 3 years I've had them. They've taken their fair share of knocks and drops and other forms of mild abuse. So I just purchased two more: one to keep by my bed for short naps (why wrestle with an inaccurate alarm clock when you want to set a beeper *quickly* for exactly 49 minutes??) and I think I'll keep the other one in my tote bag or car for when I'm out and about, multi-tasking my tush off, and need a gentle reminder.
[By the way, this unit is a handy social tool if you are looking for a graceful exit from a phone conversation. There's something authoritative and nonjudgmental about a timer interrupting and urging you to attend to your next task. Be sure the other party doesn't hear you setting, it though!]
The clip, magnet, and hole are (so far as I know) unique to the design in this unit and make it very versatile and handy to use in a variety of settings for a multitude of tasks. I always hold the timer in my hand when I set it and turn it off, so I have no complaints about its lack of stability when it is affixed to a refrigerator or other surface.
Customer Review: NOT A GOOD TIMER!!! Summary: 2 Stars
i am a bit of a timer afficionado, and i am here to tell you, this is not a good timer. it has two primary problems: (1) too many buttons (most timers just have three) and (2) WAY TOO LOUD. if you are going to make a timer this loud, you should give the consumer a switch to make it quieter. if you are going to have your timer far far away from you, maybe this is the one for you.
Customer Review: Nice timer Summary: 4 Stars
Rings loudly enough for me, but not too loudly for my husband. Price is right. Digital means easy to set (not having to push 45 times, for 45 minutes or 45 seconds).
Customer Review: Nice timer with fast entry Summary: 5 Stars
What's nice: time entry is fast, using the numbered buttons. Just enter 345 for 3 mins 45 secs and hit go... Love this!
Could be better: the back of the unit is ok - at least the magnet is strong enough to make it stick. The fold-out mechanism that allows standing it upright is a little dorky (but not weak), and makes the unit sit somewhat far from the magnetic surface. I may frankenstein the back and remove the hinging clip and attach the magnet directly, as I don't need the thing to stand on my counter.
Minor negative: Some reviewers mentioned (correctly) that the timer does not reset to the time you entered when time is up. It *would* be nice to know what the original set time was when the timer goes off, or to just hit go if you have repeat timings with the same time.
Verdict: I am surprised at the huge amount of BAD timers out there, whether online or in retail stores, for perhaps half the money. Most are really sub-par: weak (nonfunctional) magnets, confusing buttons, bad cases, crooked electronics... and they're still all around $8-$15.
This one is sturdy and fast. If you need a basic timer without any additional frills or timekeeping, you'll be happy with this one, at a slightly higher price. Recommended.
Customer Review: No off switch, weak magnet Summary: 2 Stars
I think the biggest thing missing from this is an off switch. But, if you don't mind burning through batteries or taking the battery out when you're done using it...then i guess it's okay.
The magnet isn't very sturdy either.
This was a disappointment because I like that you can type in the number.
